Music Lounge, Torquay

With a firm belief that in order for an interior scheme to be truly successful in both style and comfort, it should strive to reflect a clients individual style and personality. A room should embrace the new while simultaneously celebrating the past – stories, quirky finds & sentimental keepsakes.

Music Lounge, Torquay

Design Brief

This well travelled, Ibiza loving DJ was looking to transform his redundant dining room into a space where he could not only house his large and diverse collection of Records and DJ Decks, but also inject a little slice of Disco funk into this large Victorian family home. The West facing room was already blessed with high ceilings and a wide sweeping bay window providing us with the perfect opportunity to play with light, scale and colour.

As we looked to create a strong base pallet, we opted to use complimentary colours from the @Lick Paint colour range – Blue 07 to all walls and Green 02 on the ceiling and frieze. The aim was to represent the opulence and drama of the late Victorian grandeur, while a striking flash of Gold leaf brandishing the picture rail and cutting through the two colourways added attitude and flair to the overall colour scheme with a nod and a boogie to the 70’S Funk and Soul vibe.

Once the overall colour pallet was settled, it was time to focus on the secondary layer that would add panache to this playful and stylish zone. One of the key elements to creating a relaxing space that feels welcoming and lived-in while simultaneously providing an eclectic and intriguing backdrop, is to inject personality or ‘tell a story’. As is the case with all good story lines, the following elements are required: Setting = Room, Theme = Music, Plot = Client Brief, (to create a funky, fun relaxing room for entertaining friends and family). Character = Client, and finally Conflict = Layers of curated fixtures and fittings that individually seem apart from the overall storyline but through carefully embedded narrative interwoven together, inject intrigue and magic to the room.

One of the features that stand out in this room is the original wooden Victorian door which has been painted Gold. Since the rest of the home interior works off a monochrome colour pallet, this ostentatious door feels like a porthole into a new dimension. While the eccentric oversized pendant light fitting of antique brass and crystal, married both the classical and the funky into one great big ‘shiny disco ball’. Overall the client was exceedingly happy with the result

“A big thank you to YBRD for creating such a striking and relaxing space. I approached them with a brief to create a room that had a chilled lounge feel while simultaneously showcasing my decks and ever expanding record collection. The result has surpassed my expectations. YBRD were professional, knowledgeable, and proactive, with a timeless, refreshing and creative style. Our room has been transformed with a beautiful colour palette, warm textures and a mix of eclectic fixtures, blending together in unexpected ways to create a space that I feel I have lived in forever. I would highly recommend.”
