Holiday House Extension – West Cork, Ireland

Project overview

Set within the stunning coastal landscape of West Cork, near the picturesque village of Glandore, this project focuses on the sensitive extension of a traditional Irish stone cottage. The proposal was developed to secure planning permission for a carefully considered addition that enhances both the functionality of the home and its relationship with the surrounding rural setting.

The client sought to introduce two additional bedrooms,a new ensuite, and a practical boot room complete with double doors opening onto an external courtyard. A key aspect of the design approach was to avoid replicating the original cottage’s distinctive stonework. Instead, the extension is expressed as a complementary addition, finished in a soft lime rendering solution. This creates a clear yet respectful distinction between old and new, allowing the character of the existing cottage to remain prominent.

Located within a close-knit rural community that places great value on its landscape and setting, the design places strong emphasis on integration rather than imposition. The extension has been carefully positioned and proportioned to sit comfortably within the existing plot and wider vista. Natural landscaping plays a crucial role in this strategy. Native planting is used to soften the built form, helping the extension blend seamlessly into its surroundings while enhancing local biodiversity. The result is a scheme that feels rooted in place and respectful of its environment.

Internally, the design continues the theme of simplicity and calm. A restrained material palette, combined with soft, natural tones, creates a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere suited to a holiday home. The new spaces are designed to feel light, airy, and connected to the outdoors, with carefully framed views and a strong sense of flow throughout. The proposed extension delivers a thoughtful balance between heritage and contemporary living. By clearly distinguishing new from old, while remaining sensitive to scale, materials, and landscape, the scheme successfully enhances the original cottage without compromising its charm. This project reflects a considered approach to rural design – one that respects local character, supports community values, and creates a timeless, functional home for modern use.
