1930s Home Renovation & Extension – Totnes, Devon
Design Brief
This residential project showcases our approach to interior design in Devon, where thoughtful spatial planning meets timeless design. Our brief was to design a series of sympathetic architectural and interior design interventions that enhance the flow of the home while respecting the proportions and charm typical of 1930s British houses. A key element of the project is a new front extension, creating a welcoming entrance porch and boot room.
Internally, the layout is being reimagined to create a more connected and sociable ground floor. The kitchen will be opened into the dining room, forming a light-filled open-plan kitchen dining space ideal for everyday living and entertaining. A carefully designed arched opening with half-glazed double doors will connect the dining room to the living room, referencing classic 1930s architectural detailing while allowing light to move freely between spaces.
New 1930s-style French doors will be introduced to both the dining room and living room, creating a strong visual connection with the garden and enhancing the indoor–outdoor lifestyle so often sought in Devon family homes.
Beyond the main house, an existing concrete outbuilding will be sympathetically converted into a self-contained annex. This flexible space will provide additional guest accommodation while making efficient use of the existing structure. Throughout the renovation, the design approach prioritises retaining the period character of the original 1930s house while introducing subtle contemporary updates. All existing windows will be replaced with 1930s-style aluminium sash windows, preserving the traditional appearance while offering modern thermal performance and longevity.
The interior design scheme embraces an understated, timeless aesthetic. Natural materials such as reclaimed timber flooring will bring warmth and authenticity to the interiors, while a restrained palette and carefully selected finishes will ensure the home feels calm, elegant and quietly contemporary.
This project reflects our approach to interior design in Devon, where thoughtful spatial planning, respect for heritage architecture and carefully curated materials combine to create homes that are both beautiful and deeply functional.
